I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ann Alva Wieding, a fellow photographer and Austin art community supporter. What a joy to find someone equally passionate about helping our local talent find success! Both of us come from a place of being emerging artists ourselves, experiencing first hand the highs and lows, wanting to share what we're learning to benefit others. As a photographer, Ann has a very unique style. She loves exploring naturally occurring patterns and symmetry generated by color and light. She often seeks to create visual drama in her shots, leaning toward a mystical feel that leaves you full of wonder. It should be no surprise that one of her favorite subject matters is the moon. She manages to capture a vast array of high contrast shots with and without clouds and other environmental factors, the moon shining brightly front and center. Ann also enjoys creating collages, some looking like double exposures and other incorporating different media, but all centered around celestial subjects. As an art organizer and supporter, Ann is a founding member of a local art collective, helping curate shows for other talents looking for exposure. The Austin Art Refugees as they call themselves participate in events like EAST and WEST Austin Studio Tours, and Ann has aspirations of many more ways she can get involved in our community. I greatly enjoyed the chance to reminisce with her in our conversation, amazed at how Austin's appreciation of the arts has evolved over the years. We can only hope to see continual fostering of this part of our culture. We are lucky to have active members like Ann Alva Wieding who participate and rally for Austin artists. I'm excited to see her ideas manifest and explore future opportunities for collaboration!
