The art of origami usually involves folding paper to achieve a finished form for all to enjoy. What makes Austin artist Chun Hui Pak unique is that she prefers to unfold the paper and make a work of art out of what that yields. I bet you never would have thought that deconstructing certain types of art could create something even more beautiful! Chun is a painter well studied in traditional techniques, but now that she knows the rules, she's busy rewriting them to create thought provoking pieces that make you look twice. As cited above, my favorites are those based on unfolded origami. Chun says she was inspired by the chance to take something 3D and flatten it without losing any dimension. The trick is in how she captures the folds and patterns left in paper by different origami shapes. Most of them are fabulously geometric given the typically symmetrical nature of folding square paper. These paintings are truly fascinating, and I love how she sometimes pairs the made and unmade forms side by side so you can try to visualize where each crease came from. This artist also excels at depicting less abstract subject matter, often inspired by the beautiful landscapes and wildlife across Texas. While the style is less geometric than her origami pieces, her characteristic colorful palette shines through with wonderful liveliness!
