For some photographers, their art is all in how they frame and capture each image. They may do a touch of light editing before putting each picture on display, but they focus the most energy on snapping the perfect photo, not on the production afterwards. What makes Austin based photographer Liz Potter unique is her passion for every stage of the process. Finding, framing and sometimes arranging the subject matter of each shot comes first. Interestingly enough, Liz has found that exploring the world through a lens has actually opened her up to more discoveries and connections than you might expect of someone behind a camera. After a successful day of shooting, Liz heads to the darkroom to handprint each image. She favors a style that shows the borders of negative, giving her work a very vintage feel, often perfect for the scene shown. From there, depending on the piece, she may apply color and other artist effects by hand.
Liz is a traditionalist in the equipment she uses, a devotee of the medium format camera, with no interest in letting her Holga be replaced by digital. Her chosen subject matter, on the other hand, is a lot less traditional. Some of her most characteristic photos feature Dia de los Muertos inspired scenes with personified skeletons, all with bright pops of color hand painted on top. What a beautiful nod to such a rich culture! She also has a series of shots that capture unusual finds in everyday life with her characteristic style. As a fellow photographer who started in the darkroom, I can truly appreciate all of the work that goes into each print Liz produces, but that work is a large part of the fun!
