One image on its own can tell a very powerful story, but much like any one person's life, no story is complete in one scene. You may miss what came before that led to the depicted scenario, and you can only imagine what may come next. However, that is the beauty of narrative art like the paintings and illustrations of wonderfully talented Graham Franciose. He specializes in capturing stories that invite you in, and it is not uncommon to find yourself empathizing with the main figures. Quite a few of his scenes show characters deep in thought and riled with emotions. The cause and solution are left open to your judgement, but Graham hopes you will see the positive potential. A lot of the surrounding scenery helps communicate this hope with symbols of growth, rebirth and flight. Graham's more imaginary style of imagery allows him to convey so much in the faces of his figures because he is not bound by realist conventions. Much like a caricaturist, he has learned how and what to exaggerate for effect, ironically making the emotions more real for the viewer. Long faces, sunken expressions, wide eyes all speak to us. The addition of soft lines and color palettes help focus your attention and convey an atmosphere. For those of you who are willing to open yourself up, I invite you to take a journey into the work of Graham Franciose and see how it makes you feel.
