Skillfully Shaped & Screenprinted Functional Ceramic Art.
Artist: Sarah GermanMost artists are known for one key area of expertise where they truly excel, a skill and style that's come to be their specialty among the various techniques they may have dabbled in over the years. And yet, a large part of what makes Austin ceramic artist Sarah German unique is the way she has combined two, creating masterpieces that are all her own thanks to her marriage of Pottery and Printmaking in one! For her, the work that comes out of her studio must be beautiful, but also functional. Ceramics lend themselves well to this philosophy. The primary medium is clay, which starts off malleable, allowing the artist to achieve the desired form, but then it can be hardened for a good degree of permanence and durability for many home uses. Sarah uses porcelain clay which has a wonderful texture and white tone, perfect for decorating with glazes. Once Sarah works her wheel throwing and hand shaping magic, she throws in the printmaking. Depending on the desired pattern and the final form of each piece, she alternates between direct and indirect silkscreening. With a combination of translucent glazes, she lets the porcelain white shine through light shades with design motifs in more opaque tones on top. This multidimensional process has given Sarah her own, very characteristic style! I'm sure you can easily see that all of the below pieces belong to the same collection. But that's not to say she is repetitive. Like any great artist, she is constantly trying new applications of her favorite techniques! I can't wait to see how she evolves!
